In the Tampa Trib Halloween weekend, there was a piece about periods and how we're not teaching preteen girls to deal with it in the "right" way. They tend to think that it's gross and inconvenient, and only a few say that having a monthly cycle is a sign that their bodies are working properly. The writer said that calling it "the curse" only makes things scarier for our poor innocent girl children.

I really want to punch that writer in the face. Yes, it's nothing to be ashamed of. Yes, it's a natural thing. But it's ok to hate having a period. Seriously. It's okay. And here's why:

• It's gross. No, really, it is. It's not just blood, it's mucus and uterine lining. It smells weird. Sometimes big clots come out and let me tell you, that is a gross feeling.
• It's painful. Now I know that not all women have pain, but I do and so do all the women I'm related to, as well as most of the women I know. My daughter has extreme pain. I get cramps in my thigh and back muscles as well as my lower abdomen.
• It fucks with your emotions. I know that's a cliche, but it's true.
• It fucks with your digestive system. Not only do I eat more, but I also expel more. Way more. Every month, without fail, on day 3 my intestines rebel.
• It's inconvenient. Yes, you can regulate it on hormonal birth control, but it never fails to come when I've planned to do something fun. And then I have to deal with all the above crap and try not to ruin a good time.
• The products we have to "contain" it all suck.

The worst part is that there really aren't too many options other than just dealing with it. You could have a hysterectomy, but that's big time surgery. If you get your tubes tied, you still get your period. Sorry. Or you could try to use hormonal birth control to stop it or at least put it off. But there's no guarantee that will work. The Seasonique pill can't guarantee that either. Even the commercials tell you that.

Let's be honest. The only people who are really excited about getting their monthly visitor are girls who get it for the first time, women who are scared they might be pregnant and don't want to be, and new agey chicks who believe it gives them power. Um. Yeah. That was a little condescending.  But really.

Yesterday, Bren, Benny, and I went to BAM to browse. I ended up picking up a couple of books and our cashier was raving to the guy in front of us about how wonderful GRRM and Robert Jordan's series were. I've read all of the Wheel of Time series and I'm completely bored with it and I had a really hard time getting started with Martin's books - I just gave up and picked up Pratchett the last time I tried to read it. :D  Anyway, she was going on about how she only read sci fi and fantasy. I told her that I loved the genre too, except for books like Eragon. Then she started to defend Paolini and I tuned out. Still, it was amusing to see book snobbery like that - it's been a while since I heard anyone be so pompous in person.
