I was reading a post on a blog about how your tastes change every so often. I've never been a really picky eater - the few foods I'll outright refuse are tomato juice, okra, raw onions, cottage cheese, and overly spicy things. So it took me a while to think about what I like now that I didn't as a kid, and the only thing I could think of was cooked bell peppers. I'm still choosy about my condiments - it has to be Heinz ketchup and Hellman's mayo - but anything else, I'll happily scrumpf down. I don't like the taste of alchohol, nor am I a coffee fan, unless it's been heavily sweetened and flavored.
My daughter is shaping up to be like me, but she's quite a bit pickier. She's scared of squash and I've never met one I didn't like. She also won't eat any fat, even bacon fat. Weirdo. Ben's more like his dad right now. Bren has a list of maybe 5 vegetables and 3 fruits he'll eat. No fish, no beans, no eggs, no nuts. Benny's got a tendency to ignore everything except meat and rice, potatoes, or noodles. And chocolate. He loves applesauce, but won't eat it unless he's got graham crackers to dip. I'm hoping I can influence him to eat better. What kind of kid doesn't like corn?

Date: 2009-11-04 04:55 pm (UTC)*raises hand* I don't hate it, but it doesn't really do anything for me. I can eat it, but I hate how corn on the cob gets stuck in my teeth and think there's something gross about canned corn that I can't quite place.
But my tastes have definitely changed to much more eclectic. I used to hate most veggies, but now I love most of them (although I still don't like onions, and even though it's not a veggie, whole tomatoes are still a "eeeeh" area for me). It helps that I've been able to choose my own foods. It's a long way from refusing to eat turkey and eating PB&J on Thanksgiving to having eel be one of your favorite sushi types.

Date: 2009-11-04 09:18 pm (UTC)I've always loved most veggies, too. I never had any problems getting my dark greens at all.

Date: 2009-11-05 04:21 pm (UTC)The only canned vegetable I like is green beans. I like the odd, salty taste of them. I'll eat canned corn, potatoes, mushrooms and peas, but I prefer frozen or fresh. Any other canned veggie is gross. I wonder why canned fruit isn't as bad tasting. :/

Date: 2009-11-05 04:38 am (UTC)I am picky about my condiments as well- if I am buying them, some of them have to be specific brand names. Others? eh, I'll eat whatever.
Hopefully benny will expand his horizons.
